Childhood is full of ‘make believe’, fantasizing about the future by playing house, acting out future careers, and wedding ceremonies. Director Alice Englert explores this in The Boyfriend Game, her debut short film, which is both humorous and ominous. The story follows two best friends in the Australian outback playing the Boyfriend Game, where they each invent their ideal imaginary partners. Unfortunately, one of the girls seems to want the other girl’s fantasy more than her own…
Director Alice Englert has previously acted in Top of the Lake, Ginger and Rosa, and Beautiful Creatures. Despite already having quite a catalogue of acting work, this is her first step behind the camera following in the footsteps of her mother (Directer Jane Campion).
