Born to Be Mild
Born to Be Mild is a short documentary by Andy Oxley. The modern world is constantly speeding up. But not for the Dull Men’s Club – a group of men quite content with life’s more sedate pleasures.
The film is a celebration of everything dull but not boring from photographing mailboxes to collecting milk bottles. This short documentary introduces its audience to the Dull Men’s Club – an online organisation that shows “it’s OK to be dull”. Even though the film is about the mundane, Born to be Mild is refreshingly entertaining. It manages to tread a careful path between making the subject matter actually dull and making things too lighthearted and so not taking the passion of it’s subjects seriously enough.
The great achievement of the film is that it shows us that there is something substantial about finding joy in the commonplace – which becomes rather Zen when you think about it.
